Paper Mache Projects
Paper Mache is a beautiful problem solving exercise – for any form you build, you need some sort of mold to drape the soggy paper over. We used balloons, balled up newspaper, egg cartons, cardboard, tin foil, paper towel rolls, etc for our forms. Our Paper mache recipe was wood glue + water. High School students were given freedom on what to make, and look at all the cool things they came up with!

Roy Lichtenstein Comic Art
Seward High School Art students learned about Roy Lichtenstein, An American Pop Artist who gained popularity in the 1960s. Lichtenstein mimicked industrial printing techniques by hand, reproducing existing comic frames on a large scale and utilizing thick outlines, bold colors and Ben-Day Dots. My students did the same and did an amazing job!

SHS Pop Art
SHS Art students learned about Andy Warhol’s Pop Art and then created their own! These are reductive linocuts, where the artist carves more and more of the block as they go and prints in layers. Little blood was shed, and they did an amazing job!

Animal Paintings
Middle school art students recently completed their animal paintings! These are large paintings done with acrylic paint. They worked from a photo, first drawing by hand using a grid , working on angles, proportions, and shapes. Then they added the shadows and highlights with pencil. They traced this drawing onto thicker paper. As they painted, they mixed their own colors, and thought about texture as well. I am so proud of them, all did a great job! All 6th graders, the exception is Julie German, who is in 8th grade.

Middle School Grid Portraits
This quarter, I have the pleasure of teaching 6th graders art (plus the lovely 8th grader Julie German)! Our last project was inspired by Chuck Close, an artist who uses grids to draw amazing portraits on a large scale. Check out their work!

Mount Marathon Designs
It was only January but SHS Art class was already working on Mt. Marathon logo designs. The Seward Chamber of Commerce set rules: 4 colors, including Mt. Marathon Race, July 4th 2015, 88th Running, Seward Alaska, and Finisher! This was a cool exercise in local pride and graphic design for my students, here are some of the top ones! None were chosen this year but we will definitely enter again next year!

NOSB Art Show Results
Much thanks to Judy McDonald for the huge task of putting on the NOSB art show every year! She arranges the show with mailed in and hand delivered pieces from high schoolers all over the state, carefully unwrapping large, fragile, bubble wrapped masses, hanging art from fishing nets, matching pieces to labels, and finding local artists to juror the show. The opening was tonight at the Rea Building and will be up through the weekend. I wanted to highlight Seward participants who received awards, although teens from all over the state made and were awarded for beautiful and interesting Ocean themed art.
Seward High received two First Place Prizes!
Bekah Dean 1st Place in 3-D
Ruby Lindquist 1st Place in Mixed Media
Anastasia Storle 2nd Place in 3-D
Lydia Thomas 4th Place in 3-D
Emma Moore 4th Place in Drawing
Tyler Zacher 4th Place in Mixed Media
And the following students received Honorable Mentions:
