Self Portrait Paintings
Seward High Intro to Art Class just completed Self Portrait Paintings. The project began as a drawing assignment, with students drawing and enlarging a posterized photo of themselves by using a grid. They transferred the drawing onto canvas and painted it with tints and shades of a color of their choosing. They turned out great! Come to the Music and Arts Festival this weekend to see them in real life!

Ceramic Trays
To start off the year, Seward High ceramic students created textured draped trays. They rolled clay into 1/4 inch slabs with our slap roller, added some sort of texture through incision, stamping, applique or slicing techniques, and then draped this clay over beveled wooden forms. Thanks to Ron Hemstock for cutting the molds for us, and to the Shirks for donating stained glass scraps to melt inside.

Self Portrait Prints
To take a break from clay, Seward High’s Ceramic Classes did printmaking for their final project. They made 2 layer linocut self portrait prints. They began by photographing themselves an interesting pose, which was adjusted on photoshop under the threshold option. They traced all of the shapes of the photo onto a piece of linoleum. They then cut out the white areas and printed at least 4 copies in bright colors. Next, they cut out a bold pattern in the background and printed on top of the first prints in a darker color. They turned out great:

2 Faced Vessels and Mugs
Seward High Ceramic Students have recently wrapped up a hand building assignment, to create some sort of container which included two faces with two distinct personalities. They also finished their second wheel assignment of the semester, which was to create a mug. Here are some of the top results:
Encaustic Paintings
Seward High Art Students made Encaustic Paintings for the Art for Parks art show which is currently on display at the Kenai Fjords Visitor Center in the Harbor. The theme of the show this year was Sharing the Outdoors with the Big Wild: Moose, Goats, and Bears of Kenai Fjords National Park. The student art show, which has art from students K-12 will be on display from May 6-20, 2011. The Art for Parks program is awesome, it brings artists into classrooms of every grade in Seward, and also donates the materials for each project. Thanks to CJ Rea for organizing and to the artists involved for donating your time!
My students were assigned to create composite beasts with at least some features of a moose, goat or bear. They melted crayons on pancake griddles and painted with the wax to create textured paintings. They really had fun with this project and did great work.

Value Collages
Seward High art students made value collages, here are some of the best…They began with a photo of their choice. On the photo, they outlined 4 values, beginning with the darkest areas, then the lightest areas, then the 2 values in-between. Then they redrew the image and its value outlines onto a canvas. They treated it like a coloring book, filling in the dark value shapes with dark bits of magazine paper, the light value shapes with light colored paper and so on. This project is tedious, but the result is usually pretty cool. It also allows a lot of freedom with what sort of paper you choose to use, as long as it is the right value, you could use any array of colors and textures to fill the canvas.

Hobby Tiles
Seward High Ceramic students created individual tiles highlighting their interests to become a part of a mural that will be hung in the school. They did a great job – check it out!
