SHS Scratchboard
Scratchboard comes in sheets with a black layer on top and white, gold, or silver underneath. Students placed photos on top of the scratch board and traced over the contours of the image. This leaves dents in the scratchboard, which are used as guides on where to scratch. Students were challenged to create a scratchboard which showed different values, textures, and showed three dimensional form. They used exacto knives to scratch away the black layer, paying attenction to the directions of their strokes (texture, form) and how dense their scratch marks were (value).
I think they did a great job!

Nikki McClure Inspired Sharpie Project
For this project, students were instructed to create a design that had some solid black, some solid white, some textured areas with both black and white, and then a pop of color somewhere. We looked at the art of Olympian Paper Artist Nikki McClure for inspiration. We used sharpie markers, colored pencils, and even some acrylic paint. Here they are!

SHS Fantasy Themed Watercolors
For the Music and Arts Festival Art show, SHS students picked a fantasy subject matter to paint. They drew it, cut masking tape into thin strips, and masked out the lines. We experimented with different watercolor techniques, using salt, rubbing alcohol, saran wrap, toothpicks, tooth brushes, etc. Students could utilize any of these as they chose in their paintings. Here are some of them for you to enjoy!

Mythology Prints
Seward High Art Students made reductive linocuts focusing on mythology. Students chose any mythological creature/god they wished, from a variety of cultures across time. Then they had a friend pose for them as that god or creature, took photos, printed the best one out, and drew on top of the photo to add details from the myth, ie the snakes in Medusa’s hair. Then they traced this image onto the linoleum, and carved it away in layers to print at least 3 colors. Here are the results!
Jasmyn Sagner – Medusa
Erin Doty – Hel, Goddess of Norse Underworld
Justin Schutter – Man Bear Pig
Kelcey McKean -Ganesha

Aboriginal Style Dot Paintings
Seward High Art Students looked South to Aboriginal Australians for inspiration for a painting project. The indeginous people of Australia have been creating works of art covered in dots for tens of thousands of years. They dip sticks into pigment to stamp out dots historically on bark, rocks, logs, and today on canvases. These dot patterns tell stories and map out journeys.
SHS Art Students created paintings for the National Oceans Science Bowl Art Show with Ocean themes . We drew out our designs, painting solid color down, and then used paint pens to decorate with dots. This was a super fun project and they all did a great job!
