Watercolor Sampler
To begin a watercolor unit, I asked students to create a design with at least 12 shapes to practice different techniques in. They cut masking tape into thin strips and used it to divide up the paper. They experimented with salt, rubbing alcohol, saran wrap, tissue paper, liquid frisket, wet into wet, glazing, gradients, scrafitto, splattering, dry brush, and blowing paint. Their designs end up looking like stained glass, here they are!

Dream Catchers
Intro to art students created dream catchers using metal hoops, fake sinew, feathers and beads. Dream catchers were first made by the Ojibwe Nation (aka Chippewa) to hang above sleeping babies. The dream catchers were meant to entangle bad dreams while allowing good dreams to pass through the hole in the center. Native groups around the country, including here in Alaska since have adopted the artform. Here are Seward High Students versions:

Skate Park Mural!
Seward High’s Advanced Art class is working together with the Seward Mural Society to create a Mural for the community which will be located on the restrooms behind the skate park near Ballaine and Adams.
Mural Location
Students each came up with their own proposal, we have the panels to paint on, now we just need to decide which mural to do! I’m asking for your help to choose the winning mural, please look at the mural proposals below and vote for your top 3 choices using this survey link. Since this mural will be located next to the playground and skate park, I encourge kids especially to vote!
Keep in mind when voting that students had a choice of medium for planning their design, they used colored pencil, markers, chalk, watercolor…The mural we actually paint will be with the typical latex house paint for a solid, clean look which will upstand the weather. Thank you for participating! Click on images to enlarge.
