Ceramic Hands

For our first project in SHS’s Ceramics Class and SMS Art Class we went back to basics – the human hand.  Hands have been connected to our personal identities and to our humaness since we lived in caves.  Seward High Students took inspiration from henna designs, hand tattoos, folk art, and anataomy to name a few.  Great job!

2nd Quarter Art

There is a large variety of art here from the High School.  Some of these pieces were focused on Art History, learning about an artist and recreating his or her famous painting.  Some of the art is focused specifically on Vincent Van Gogh, because we recently got to go to an exhibit focused on his work at the Anchorage Museum!  Thanks so much to the Seward PTA and the Seward Arts Council for your help in funding this trip!  The linocuts were based on Life Drawings SHS Students did.  None of these were traced, all were drawn by hand!  Hope you enjoy, I have had great students this semester!

Seward High Art Class First Quarter

A whole quarter has nearly gone by!  Here are some art updates!  We began the quarter making small shrinky dink accessories.  This was to practice our shrinky dink skills for the upcoming Capitol Christmas Tree Ornament project.  We decorated the thin plastic sheets with sharpie and colored pencil, then baked them in the oven and watched them shrink to about 1/3 of their original size.  I don’t have photos of the Ornaments, but maybe you saw some of them in person at SMAF?  And I do have a photo of the shrinky dink portion of Riley Von Borstel’s Ornament below!

We had a two week figure drawing unit where we began by drawing Renaissance based formulas for the skeleton, face, and male and female forms.  Then we did Life Drawing, students took turns posing for the rest of the class to draw in various costumes.  Students had to learn how to draw quickly from observation, capturing proportions, contour lines, light and shadow in various mediums.  They caught on really quickly!

First Quarter Ceramics

Seward High Ceramics Class has been up to a lot this quarter!  They began by making paper mache circus animals to decorate the Seward Music and Arts Festival.  This involved drawing out patterns, projecting them onto large sheets of plywood, cutting the parts out with jigsaws and routers, constructing the wooden forms with screws and nails, adding the muscle and flesh with newspaper and chicken wire, paper mache-ing the outside, and painting!  Here are some process shots!

 

After all that work, they finally began with clay, and the first assignment was to create a sculptural container with a removable lid:
